First off, how flattered we are that 1) you're on this page and wanting to know about us; and 2) that you're actually reading it. We're pretty much an open book, and by the end of this you may very well think, "Wow. Holy shit these guys are awesome/crazy/weird AF."
We're Nic and Kaleb, two gregarious thirty-something gays, that decided to quit our day jobs and take a couple years to explore this amazing world. Until recently, we hailed from San Francisco, California. We traded our lanyards and walk-in closets for passports and 40L backpacks. We’re off galavanting around this great big world in search of penguins, new cultures and experiences that will gift us memories to last a lifetime.
We met many moons ago in the backroom of a dark and dingy bar in San Francisco. Yes, an actual bar…IRL. No swiping involved. People seem skeptical that anything good can come out of a bar…but we are proof that you can find something besides a hangover, bad decisions, and venereal diseases.
Nic is the more mature (in the age sense), responsible, tall, dark and handsome of our dynamic gay duo. He grew up in sunny Northern California close-ish to San Francisco. Formerly a banker, Nic enjoys organizing and tidying, dogs, running, and busting a move to 90s R&B and Hip Hop (ooooohhhh yeaaaaaahhh!). He’s commonly referred to by Kaleb as “the model”; 1) due to his dapper self; and 2) since Kaleb cringes at the thought of photos of himself.
Nic’s much more the homebody, low key type—opting for Netflix and chill over nightly partying and bar hopping. Well, that is until you give him a couple of drinks and D.A.N. (Drunk Ass Nic), Nic’s drunk alter-ego, comes out. Then all bets are off and nothing short of debauchery ensues.
Kaleb, on the other hand, is the shorter, creative, wise-crackin' kid from the Midwest. He's known to have the mouth of a sailor--rather colorfully sprinkling in the F-bomb like fire-crackers at the Fourth of July. He grew up in the midst of corn fields in a a bustling metropolis of Chalmers, Indiana (pop. 300—when school is in session).
When not traveling, he's listening to podcasts, sketching and painting, practicing yoga (namaste!) or Googling answers to life's most uninteresting questions. He’s more the dreamer of the two—always conjuring up ideas, schemes, and plots to thicken. He’s constantly curious—asking way too many prying questions of the unsuspecting local.
Prior to embarking on his midlife crisis, he was a Product designer & Researcher for tech companies in the bay area—pushing pixels and buttons. Ever the researcher, he’s constantly googling and reading about their next current and upcoming destination, picking out fabulous hotels to stay at, and planning their next meal.
Sometime in 2015, we made the decision to start saving for an epic year off of travel. Both of us were starting to get burned out in our jobs and the Bay Area, we took a hard look at our life and decided to make the leap and plan an adult gap year. Some have called this a mid-life crisis...which is probably appropriate...but we prefer to say it's a hard reboot on life.
Fast forward to 2018, we've got our savings in hand and a tentative plan. We've landed on traveling South America (almost all of it), Antartica (yep, we're going there), Southeast Asia, and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). We officially said dueces to our jobs in March 2018, sold our house, packed up our pooches and set off on a cross country road trip to Kaleb's mom's house in Florida (aka doggy daycare).
On April 12th, 2018, we flew out to the Colombian islands of San Andres and Providencia to kickstart our epic journey. We've been working our way through South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina..) and are making our way south. It's been quite the adventure so far--from swimming with sea turtles and sea lions in the Galapagos to sand-boarding down sand dunes in a desert oasis in Peru--and there's no end in sight.
We've started this blog mainly as a connection to those family and friends at home so they can know what we're up to, but also as a resource to everyone out there who might be planning their own midlife crisis (we mean adult gap year). We're passionate about travel, exploring this great big world, and also doing it in a responsible and sustainable way (a bit of an oxymoron when thinking about travel).
If you made it this far, you’re either enthralled by the total beautiful disaster that is our story or
